Philosophy Toolkit

About Me and This Blog

My name is Sanford Levy and I teach undergraduate philosophy at Montana State University in Bozeman Montana.  Students new to many academic subjects are often puzzled by what it is they are supposed to do with that subject, how to approach it, how to read its literature, how to participate in it. This is particularly true of philosophy, a field that leaves many puzzled even after several years of study. In this blog I will publish periodic pieces designed to give guidance to students, especially for students in academic classes, but also for those wishing to study philosophy on their own.  I will not at this time write about particular philosophers or philosophical puzzles. I am  interested in guiding students in the reading of philosophical works, in the writing philosophical essays, and in thinking as at least some professional philosophers like to think.  As my main interest is in moral philosophy, most of the examples I use will be from that field, but a lot of what I say is applicable more generally.  Some of my contributions will take the form of pages and some will take the form of posts in the archieve.
